Financial Planning Week Comes to Morningstar
Do you have a sound financial plan? Get started: Financial Planning Week starts Monday.
Surveys Show Lack of Financial Knowledge
We could all use a little help in this regard. According to the IFP's web site for the event, "One in three adults does not plan their finances, and those that do, set aside a miserly five minutes a week." Further, young adults--those who could realise the largest benefit by saving even a small amount towards their future retirement--appear to know more about iPods than ISAs: "About 15% of 18-24 year olds think an ISA is an iPod accessory, and one in ten think it's an energy drink."
Investor Behaviour Suggests More Work is Needed
At Morningstar, we see the results of this lack of knowledge in investor behaviour--money routinely flows to the funds with strong recent performance, which is one of the worst ways to select an investment. Conversely, investors appear to pay relatively little attention to fundamental issues such as cost and how a fund fits into a broader portfolio context.
Whether you do your own planning or hire a professional, it pays to know what you're about. Think about all the research you undertook before buying your last computer. Most of us would have at least investigated things like the amount of memory, the size of the hard-disk, the operating system used, reliability, and cost. But when it comes to investments, the level of planning and research often drops off. Perhaps it just seems too daunting--and it's certainly not as exciting as the instant gratification of purchasing a new computer. But there's almost nothing that's more important than planning for your financial future: If you aren't saving today--now--even a small amount, you could be missing out on tens of thousand of pounds in the future.
Financial Planning Week at Morningstar
To help investors get more out of Financial Planning Week, Morningstar will be publishing educational content, interactive polls, and quizzes throughout the week. We'll follow up each poll with an analysis of the results on the next day. In addition, the IFP has just carried out a major consumer financial planning survey, organised by YouGov in conjunction with NS&I. We will provide the results and our analysis of them on Monday. Each day of the week will have a theme corresponding to a particular area which is an important part of the process in planning your finances and indeed your life:
- Monday – Step 1. Your Goals
- Tuesday – Step 2. Your Budget
- Wednesday – Step 3. Making the Most of What You've Got
- Thursday – Step 4. Planning for the Unexpected
- Friday – Step 5. Saving & Investing
Please check back often during Financial Planning Week. Whether you're just starting to think about your financial future, or feel that you're well along the path to a sound financial plan, there will be ample opportunity for you to learn, interact, and share your knowledge with others.
As part of Financial Planning Week, Morningstar is creating a special library of content that can be reprinted on your Web site at no charge. Contact us for more details and permission.
